HAMPTON, N.H. (Oct. 2, 2012) —The pace of adoption and incorporation of new IT solutions in the healthcare industry generated opportunities for all vendors in Technology Business Research Inc.’s 2Q12 PSBQ Healthcare IT Services Benchmark. The role of mobile healthcare solutions continued to gain importance in 2Q12, with increased consumerization of devices employed in healthcare delivery as well as rising demand for solutions to ensure the integration and security of these devices.

“The increased use of smartphones and tablets to access and update patient information is compelling healthcare providers and payers to assume responsibility for the security of patient data across networks and devices they do not directly control,” said Joseph Walent, TBR analyst and healthcare IT services lead. “Many healthcare IT services vendors have responded with mobile solutions that address niche-focused needs of the healthcare industry, including the large volume of data being created by mobile devices, the privacy of patients’ data and the seamless interoperability of devices and systems.”

The coordination of care delivery across the healthcare space to serve the patient community is also leaning increasingly on HIT solutions and their interoperability; the coordination of care received a boost in late June from the U.S. Supreme Court. Walent commented, “The Affordable Care Act was deemed constitutional on June 28, validating healthcare IT services vendors’ bets on solutions enabling providers to migrate to outcome-based healthcare delivery models from volume-based models.” In the U.S., outcome-based reimbursement for Medicare patients began to be phased in beginning Oct. 1, 2012. Healthcare IT services vendors are developing solutions that help establish Accountable Care Organizations (ACO). These solutions are designed to smooth handoffs between hospitals and clinics and local providers; some project that striving for overall wellness through this initiative will save Medicare nearly $1 billion over three years.

In the 2Q12 PSBQ Healthcare IT Services Benchmark, the top-scoring general IT services providers were IBM Global Services, CGI and HP Services. IBM Global Services, also the top-scoring vendor in the benchmark, generated consistently strong scores across all three of the scoring areas. CGI scored highly in the market strategy and resource management strategy areas, as did HP Services. In 2Q12, IBM Global Services completed engagements with several hospitals and clinics in Russia, including the Hospital of Murom Railway, where IBM and business partner KMIS implemented an automated information management solution. Investing in Russia will help IBM GS remain the leading total HITS revenue capturer throughout 2H12. Healthcare is CGI’s fastest-growing vertical, supported by contract wins in the U.S. federal sector providing EHR/EMR and health-specific technology services. CGI’s August acquisition of Logica will immensely increase the firm’s corporatewide EMEA resources. TBR believes CGI will leverage these resources to boost its HITS revenue in the region, which currently contributes only 5% of the firm’s total HITS revenue. HP Services continues to leverage its core strength in state/local engagements to drive growth in its HITS vertical, evidenced by the Oklahoma State and Education Employees Group Insurance Board (OSEEGIB) contract renewal to provide a range of healthcare administrative process services.

The top-scoring healthcare pure-plays were NextGen Healthcare and Cerner. NextGen Healthcare was also the top healthcare-industry-specific vendor and the second-highest scoring vendor overall due to strong resource and financial management scores. Cerner earned a strong resource management score in 2Q12, in part due to its focus on providing implementation and maintenance services around its proprietary solutions and its success controlling expenses, both of which are driving leading margin performance for the firm.

Healthcare IT services vendors in TBR’s 2Q12 PSBQ Healthcare IT Services Benchmark continue to leverage demand for Electronic Health Records (EHR) and the associated Health Information Exchanges (HIE) to drive their growth. Healthcare provider clients will also be looking to the healthcare IT services vendors for solutions that enable the digitization of healthcare data to drive down costs generated from repetitive tests. The complexity of requirements in the second phase of demonstrating meaningful use of EHRs and the associated incentive payments is also expected to drive demand for the services and solutions offered by healthcare IT services vendors. Finally, TBR believes providers, payers and government agencies are seeking analytical solutions that enable them to securely and efficiently harvest insights from the ever-expanding plethora of health data.
